The 20,000 pound Red Bull Kamaz Dakar Rally truck drove full speed up the most famous drive way in the World, sideways.. (2 VIDEOS)
With the 2016 Goodwood Festival of Speed behind us, there were many vehicles that made an impression ranging from the Mercedes-AMG GT-R to the Michelin Parade of Supercars. However, none of them were quite as big, literally as the Red Bull Kamaz Dakar Rally truck.
Kamaz is a Russian truck brand. In my mind, the Russians make the most impressive trucks in the World. As a result, it is fitting that the Red Bull Kamaz Dakar Rally truck is Russian.
The Shock of a 20,000 pound truck drifting
Weighing in at 20,000 pounds or nine tons, the behemoth, like all of its smaller brethren also navigated up the most famous driveway in the World. The thing is that like all of the other participants, the drive was at full-throttle. As the video below show, the results were nothing short of jaw dropping.
One expects to see race cars of all types driving sideways at full speed. A full-size semi truck is a whole different story. The massive size and roar of the engine is intimidating and the speed at which the truck is travelling is downright threatening.
To power a 20,000 pound truck at full speed, takes an equally impressive engine. The heart of the Red Bull Kamaz Dakar Rally truck is a massive 17.2-liter V8 diesel engine putting out 900 horsepower. Horsepower is just one measure of power. The other is torque and this beast produces close to 2,000 pound-feet of it. Converting power to forward motion is a 16-speed manual ZF-transmission. Yes, you read that correctly, a 16-speed manual transmission.
A 2,000 mile journey to the Goodwood Festival of Speed
The Red Bull Kamaz Dakar rally truck drove 2,000 miles to make an appearance at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed. No doubt that the most difficult part of the trip must have been navigating through traffic. This fact alone attests to the mad skills that these drivers have.
Below is the video of the Red Bull Kamaz Dakar Rally truck at full speed up the Goodwood family estate driveway. It is a sight to behold.
