A Porsche 908-04 Concept rendering inspired by the geniuses at Gran Turismo
Gran Turismo has no doubt made countless car fans of gamers. This has benefitted automobile manufacturers in many different ways. As a result, the creator of Gran Turismo carries a lot of weight in the industry.
A big car fan himself, the founder of Gran Turismo, Kazunori Yamauchi created the Gran Turismo Vision project to enable car companies to create their vision of the ideal GT car. While many car companies signed on and submitted some pretty outrageous designs, Porsche wasn’t one of the them as they have nothing to do with the video game series.
Named the 908-04 Concept, it was inspired by prototypes submitted to Gran Turismo by independent artists. However, it is the work of six very talented individuals. The 908 is described as a “back to basics” project, for big car fans. It seeks to capture the essence of what racing is.
If the 908-04 sounds familiar, it is because it should. The concept rendering is a modern interpretation of Porsche’s 1969 908 LH. The designer opted to give the vehicle a “long tail” due to the unique design that brought about the golden age of endurance racing.
As time has passed, the elongated tail has come to represent the golden age of racing and is instantly recognizable as being a late 60s and early 70 racer, in much the same way as F1 cars or Le Mans racers are today.
By incorporating modern Porsche styling cues, the 908-04 concept rendering combines the past and present, bonding the automaker’s heritage and design into an incredible racing package. The designer of the vehicle says that the he was inspired by the beauty of purely mechanical cars and sought to incorporate a mechanical soul into his design.
Looking at the design of the vehicle, I don’t think too many people would have been upset if the designer went about creating another hybrid racer. Their vision of a Porsche 908-04 concept is breathtaking.
