Dinan S1 produces 530 horsepower and comes with a 4-year/50,000 mile warranty
What is the best way to get 530 horsepower and a factory warranty out of your BMW M4?
The answer is the Dinan S1 based on the BMW M3/M4.
Based in Northern California, Dinan is a very well known and respected BMW tuner in the United States. With 36 years of experience and having had their hands on just about every model of BMW released over that period of time, to say Dinan is an expert regarding BMW performance and performance parts is quite frankly an understatement.
Dinan engine modifications
Dinan’s has most recently had their attention focused on the BMW M4. The F80 BMW M3 and F82 BMW M4 both reportedly put out 425 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. Like the manufacturers of many 1960 muscle cars, BMW is known to understate the performance of their vehicles. Dinan measures the stock BMW M4 at 484 horsepower and 446 lb-ft of torque.
When Dinan performed their magic on the BMW M4, they chose to work optimize what was already there instead of adding something altogether new. They did this by focusing on the twin-turbo systems that come with the stock M3/M4. Dinan upgrades some of the hardware to deliver a bump at performance but not at the expense of reliability.
The heart of the Dinan S1 is the “Dinantronics” unit which focuses on using every sensor built into the motor to increase boost safely. Dinan adds their carbon fiber cold air intake and free flow exhaust system to get 530 horsepower and 504 lb-ft of torque out of the engine. This is an increase of 105 horsepower and 98 lb-ft of torque over the factory’s reported output.
Dinan’s free flow exhaust system weighs three pounds less than the stock unit that the M3/M4 leaves the factory with. The exhaust system maintains the stock values that allow drivers to adjust exhaust volume at the touch of a button. A second set of exhaust valves are used to increase exhaust flow by 45 percent.
Performance under warranty
While the increase is not out of this world, Dinan has sufficient confidence in their modifications to offer BMWs 4-year/50,000 mile warranty. BMW also has sufficient confidence in Dinan’s products to offer their performance parts for sale and installation in their extensive dealer network.
To fully optimize their performance improvements to the M3/M4, Dinan makes available with their S1 kit a custom adjustable coilover kit, tubular adjustable sway bars and a new lower control arms.
Dinan’s S1 kit is available at a cost of $10,000 plus the cost of your M3/M4 at your local BMW dealer or through Dinan themselves.
While Dinan’s performance upgrades are modest at best, the fact that you they come with a factory warranty should make everybody in the market to increase the performance of their M3/M4 take a second look.
