Brabus G850, About Extremes

Brabus 850 unveiled. 850 horsepower, all-wheel-drive and exteme luxury

The Mercedes AMG G63 has had a reputation of being a little bit absurd in urban environments. I mean who really needs a 571 horsepower 3-ton SUV whose design is over thirty years old.

Apparently, AMG felt differently when they released their AMG G63 6×6 in 2013. It was a 6-wheel drive fire-breathing, dirt-eating monster of a machine. A bit over 100 were produced and all sold at a price in excess of $600,000.

Fast-forward to 2016 and the engineers at Brabus have decided to one-up AMG with their release of the G850. The ‘850’ in G850 symbolizes the horsepower that the vehicle puts out.

The G850 Engine

The Brabus G850 is based on the G63 AMG power plant. It is a 5.5 liter V8 engine with displacement increased to 5,912 cubic centimeters and two custom Brabus turbochargers. Additional enhancements include a larger air intake with a sports filter and a Brabus sports exhaust system.

The result of the engine modifications is 850 horsepower and an earthshaking 1,070 lb-ft of torque. Yes, over 1,000 lb-ft of torque. Get this. Torque is electronically limited to protect the transmission. That engine is capable of even more performance.

The G850 Body Kit

Exterior enhancements to the Brabus G850 consist of the Brabus Widestar body kit package.   This enhancement serves two purposes, first, it gives the car a unique, aggressive, and stylish look and second, it helps to stabilize the vehicle at high speeds. The Brabus Widestar package consists of the usual body kit items including bumpers, spoilers, side skirts, hood and wheels.

The wheels that come with the Brabus G850 are massive low profile wheels that more appropriate on a supercar than an SUV. The massive wheels make the exposed Brembo brakes look grossly undersized and insufficient. This could be a matter of perspective because of the very large wheels.

Brabus does not provide us with any information on performance on pricing but if you must ask, you probably can’t afford it.

This type of vehicle begs the question, just what type of person would buy such a behemoth.

In the United States, the owner would needless to say fit the stereotype of the AMG G-Class owner. However, in other parts of the World, such a vehicle may be completely acceptable. Such a place would be much more about luxury and great wealth. Such a place may perhaps be the Middle East. One of the pictures provides us a clue where this type of vehicle is very much in demand and that is the Middle East. With that said, just who am I to declare such a vehicle absurd and preposterous.
