Like the 3.0 CSL Hommage from last year, the BMW 2002 Turbo Hommage Concept draws upon the past to define its future
The legendary BMW 2002 is the defining vehicle for BMW that made it what it is today. It created an entirely new segment called the sports sedan. The 2002 Turbo was also the first turbocharged production vehicle in Europe. BMW celebrates its past with the BMW 2002 Turbo Hommage Concept.
Last year at roughly this same time, BMW unveiled a 3.0 CSL hommage concept at the Concourso d’Eleganza at Villa d’Este. BMW showed up again this year and pretty much outdid themselves unveiling a concept called the 2002 hommage.
Based on the BMW M2, the 2002 hommage has incorporates several design influences from the legendary sports sedan. Like the original 2002 Turbo, the hommage features the mirrored ‘turbo’ script on the front air dam to let slower moving traffic know what is quickly approaching them from behind.
Additional characteristics seen in the concept that draws upon the original include a single large headlight in place of the double headlights that have been a defining characteristic on BMWs for several decades now. Additionally, the orange front turn indicators are mounted above the front headlights right below the trunkline and a carbon fiber accent runs around the beltline of the vehicle just as the chrome trim around the original more than fifty years before.
The hommage concept also takes design cues from BMW’s E21 chassis 3-series race cars as well with hints in the front and rear spoilers.
Design cues extend to the rear of the concept as well in the form the taillights. They have the same overall look and feel even though they are different.
Like the 3.0 CSL hommage unveiled last year, the 2002 concept draws upon BMW’s racing heritage with the use of flared box fenders, a red tow loop, and an aggressive racing stance.
Unlike the hommage to the 3.0 CSL, the 2002 concept is gorgeous. Let us hope that some of the design cues from the concept make their way into future production vehicles.
